Total rainwater harvested

The primary goal of the project was to contribute to the water security of 44 villages. This goal has been accomplished. Water security for 48 villages has been assured. This year was a year of drought in large parts of western India including Rajasthan. For farmers without access to irrigation, the crops have failed and there is going to be a shortage of fodder in the coming months. Starting from February, there will be a shortage of water for their animals and many will be forced to sell or release their animals into the fields. Households will face an intensifying scarcity of water as the summer approaches and by May, many villages will be dependent on the weekly visits of the water tankers.

The villages that have been covered under this project have a different story to tell. While, of course, there are still many farmers without access to irrigation as they cannot afford either the rent or tube wells in their fields, all households have access to water for themselves and their animals and these villages will not see a shortage of good quality fodder. No family will be forced into distress sale of their animals for lack of water or fodder.

The table that follows details the approximate volumes of water harvested till date. This year, 1.3 billion litres were harvested. Most structures filled till almost 80%, some filled to capacity and 2 filled more than once, Nosal and Jhag overflowed. The table provides very conservative estimates. The attention that was given to the location of each of the structures has to be noted here. Collecting the largest amount of rainwater in the shortest possible time was the deciding factor in location selection. This is the reason why this area has plenty in a year of drought.
